The filter system returned to service on Monday, March 9. The iron and manganese particles currently in the water should clear over the next few days. It may take about a week for the new, filtered water to fully replace the existing water in the distribution system, but you should see steady improvement each day. Thank you for your patience throughout this project.

Vandenberg Village Community Services District is currently upgrading its water filtration system. This work involves removing and replacing the media inside the filter vessel. The filtration system that typically removes secondary contaminants such as iron and manganese must be temporarily bypassed during this process. During this time, the water will be disinfected only.
While the filter is out of service, customers may notice temporary changes in the water’s taste or smell. Despite these aesthetic differences, the water remains safe to drink.
- Iron: Levels above the EPA’s Secondary Maximum Contaminant Level (SMCL) of 0.3 milligrams per liter (mg/L) may occur. Elevated iron can cause aesthetic issues such as metallic taste, reddish‑brown staining of fixtures and laundry, and potential buildup in plumbing. These levels do not pose a health risk and remain safe for consumption.
- Manganese: Manganese is a naturally occurring element often found in groundwater. Although it does not have an enforceable federal Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL), the EPA has set a non-enforceable SMCL of 0.05 mg/L to address aesthetic concerns such as taste, odor, and staining.
